Vanessa Visits, Whale Watching in the San Juan Islands, Mike and Lauren Visit!

I know I am slowing down on this Blog thing, so I apologize to those who continue to follow our adventures. Well, it looks like we may be here a bit longer, until December 12th probably, so that we can start a new contract after taking time off for the holidays. Well, last Thursday my sister Vanessa came out to visit from PA. She got in late Thursday, and we caught up that night. I had taken Friday off, and Vanessa had to "telecommute" to work in the morning (which she drank coffee, and ate breakfast while on the computer), so in the afternoon we went to the driving range to hit some golf balls. Then we went to the Southcenter Mall in Tukwila while we waited for CORT furniture to pick up the furniture from our old apartment. After that, we decided to walk around Seattle a bit, as Amy didn't get off of work, and back home until 8 pm. We started off in the Seattle Center, and did our usual sightseeing of the Space Needle, Seattle Center....things we've done a million times before. Then, we took the monorail into the city, so that Vanessa could partake in her most favorite activity......shopping. I stood outside most of the stores that she ventured into, and afterwards took her challenge to play the arcade basketball hoops game that they had in the nearby Gameworks arcade. After serving up my sister some humble pie, we had a quick bite of dinner, and headed back to the house. The next day we all awoke early in the morning to take the Victoria Clipper to the San Juan Islands to enjoy some whale watching. We reached the dock bright and early and we secured a nice spot on the boat, grabbed a "breakfast basket" and quickly fell asleep. I did not realize that the ride to the san juan islands was just about 3.5 hours long! The ride was smooth and as the sun rose, the clouds parted and gave us a beautiful, but chilly day. After arriving at Friday Harbor, we stayed on the boat and off we went again around the island to spot some whales. We walked up to the top deck of the boat where the nice 60 degree weather met us. We saw many harbor seals and puffin like birds swimming in the frigid northwest water. Amy even got a great shot with the telephoto lens of a seal eating a fish! We didn't even know it was eating a fish, we just saw it swim up from under the water. Unfortunately, we only got to see a lone Minke whale which we followed for 15 minutes until we made our way back to Friday Harbor. Once there, we walked around the main street of the little island and the girls enjoyed the shops and bookstores that lined the streets. We had lunch at a little restaurant on the hill, which had beautiful views of the harbor. After a couple hours of exploring, we made our way back to the boat for our trip back. It turned out to be a gorgeous ride back, with a cloudless sky giving view to the Olympic Mountains, we got to see both Mt. Baker to the north and Mt. Rainier to the south. It was very cold on the deck of the boat, but Amy was a trooper and took some awesome pictures of the landscape at dusk. The night was uneventful as we got back to the house and caught up on Grey's Anatomy and Entourage while eating dinner. The next day we brought Vanessa to all the sites that we brought Bender to. So, I will be brief and not put up any more photos of the same sites. Then, we went to satisfy my sister's weird obsession with Indian food and tried a highly recommended place called Naan and Curry located in Renton, WA. The food and front end of the restaurant was great, and we will frequent the restaurant again, if we crave Indian food. That night we drove Vanessa to the airport and saw our 3rd guest come and go. The next day we prepared for our next guests, my friend Lauren from Northeastern, and her boyfriend Mike, both off a 3 week roadtrip through New Zealand. They are currently making their way back to the East Coast, so they made a trip out to see us. They arrived late Monday night, showered quickly, and then we went into Seattle to meet with another one of their friends who works in the area as well. The next day we had to work, so Lauren and Mike entertained themselves and had their own adventures with a towing truck. They were even nice enough to make us a delicious dinner upon our arrival back home from work! The next day they left, and we continued on our week. This weekend, we didn't do anything but relax. I absolutely LOVE October, not because of my birthday, but because there are few things better than watching the Red Sox in October make a run for another World Series!! Amy roots for the Red Sox too, but her loyalty still lies with Phillies. I just hope they don't play each other in the World Series, or we will have to break up for that week. Amy wanted some time to plan out my birthday weekend, so I made a nice dinner for us last night. It was a good relaxing weekend. This weekend we may be going out to Portland, Oregon, or the Olympic peninsula for my birthday! We also have our friend Tiffany from Philly coming out to visit us later this month, and hopefully Scott, Amy's brother will be coming out for a visit as well. I think we are still trying to coerce our parents to make a trip, but we'll see what happens. Until next time everyone, and I will continue to try to update the blog regularly!
Check out our view from our new place on the Puget Sound! Much better than the old view of the apartment complex.
